Escape game.

Last week we carried out a particularly motivating activity that encourages teamwork, organization and time management as well as the search for a common goal for the whole group.
It is an educational escape game. As you already know we have been working a captivating learning centre: New York

So, we handed out an outstanding piece of news: “Six thieves have stolen the Statue of Liberty”:

Each work group had the mission of finding a thief and in order to solve it, they had to pass 4 tests, related to topics we studied in class before: literacy ca, que, qui, co cu spelling rules; maths, how to borrow when subtracting; and Natural Science: bones and muscles.

Little by little, the students got all the necessary clues to solve what we asked for: name and surname of the thief, name and number of the street where they lived.
Finally, we showed them a map of New York, and each group had to find the exact location of the address … and they did it!

By the way, this activity was designed by Miriam, a trainee teacher who has been working with me during this term. A few days ago she delivered a FUNtastic lesson using plickers.

LETS PLAY KAHOOT!!

Kahoot has become a great tool for the school. With it we not only evaluate the contents that our children are acquiring, also we are introducing the use of technology in the classroom. They love it and we love to see them enjoying.

PLICKERS… IN USE.

A couple of weeks ago Miriam, who is doing her Teacher Training, started to work with me in class, which is a great luck for me as she is a very proactive and creative teacher. For example, throughout these first days of her training, in addition to actively participating in some of the lessons, she has implemented a questionnaire based on the contents that we have worked in social sciences with our year two students. To do this, she has used PLICKERS. In the following sequence of photographs you can see the use of this wonderful application (top job, Miriam).

Each student is given a card. They will use the card to show their answers. Each side of the card has a letter A, B, C or D, and the student must show the card leaving the option chosen in the upper side.

Then, the teacher projects the questions (previously created by the teacher in PLICKERS)

Students then show their answers to the teacher…

and the teacher walks around the class using her mobile to read the answers…

This is what the teacher sees through her mobile…

Students can follow their progress in the screen…

And the teacher gets inmedate feed back ( and a downloadable sheet with the score of each student)

TEAMWORK RECOGNITION

Two months ago my second graders started working cooperatively.

In that post I don’t explain it, but briefly, that’s how we started …
First, I let each child choose a partner to sit with. After getting to know them, I put two couples together, taking into account my first impressions, to form teams of four students. An important part of teamwork is that it has recognition. For that reason, I use one of the applications that we have already shared in our blog: it is Class Dojo. This application allows me to rate positive behaviors, and also allows me to group students, thus being able to rate teamwork. Well, today, two months later, four teams have managed to reach thirty points…

and to celebrate, they will create a collaborative game, called

mathematical mikado.

Enjoy!

KAHOOT: make learning awesome.

It is known how KAHOOT has become so essential in our way of teaching. KAHOOT is a web tool that allows you to create activities —based on quizzes and tests-— in order to challenge your students in a particular theme. It has easy management, for that reason is one of the gadgets you should drive with the aim of catching children’s attention. All you need is a device to show the KAHOOT activity and your pupils need to have devices as well.

Let us introduce you a basic learning way of how KAHOOT works. In other words. let’s have a look at all the possibilities KAHOOT can give you in three easy steps:

1- LOGIN:

The first thing you have to do is create a KAHOOT account. The register is easy because you can use your Google account or your Facebook account.

2- Create a KAHOOT TASK:

In Kahoot you can create many tasks. One of our favorite as a teacher is the quizzes. It could be a great choice to look over a particular theme —taught at a previous lessons—.

Also, the quiz is one of our favorites, KAHOOT allows you to create a survey or a jumble as well.

If you don´t have time to create a quiz or a test, there is no problem. You can count on a huge KAHOOT quizzes base-data where you can find out the best for you.  Honestly, we recommend to create a KAHOOT task by yourself —it is the best way to fit the quiz to your course need— but it is up to you.

3- Invite to join:

Once you have created the quiz, let’s play. Once you click on PLAY, a new display will be opened. In the new window, a code to join has been generated.

You need to tell your audience to type on the browser kahoo.it. In this new page your audience —the students— will type the code and generate a Nickname to play. Once all the participants are joined, you can look at them on your screen and start the game.

TOO NOISY.

The “Too Noisy App” has been designed to assist a teacher keep control of general noise levels in a classroom using a visual stimulus.

As the noise level in a classroom increases beyond an acceptable level the noise level meter dynamically indicates the level of noise, and the background graphics within the app change to reflect the noise levels.

Teachers are able to control the sensitivity of the app by using the sensitivity slider within the app itself so the app can be used for all types of lessons.

The app can be run directly on the iPad/iPhone or displayed on the classroom multi-touch panel/interactive whiteboard by using the screen mirroring functionality built into the the Apple devices (note this feature requires AppleTV or equivalent screen mirroring apps/devices).

PECHAKUCHA: 20X20. Perfect for presentations in your classroom.

PECHAKUCHA is the name of a presentation format based on simplicity, efficiency, and efficacy.

Most of the time, we as spectators usually get bored because of the presentation document, the speaker way of talking or even the presentation is too long to keep attention. With PECHAKUCHA that is not possible to happen because the speaker has to limit itself to a closed format: 20 images (slides) and 20 seconds per each.

If you show your students this idea and put into practice with them, they will able to perform a presentation in a truly professional way. It also helps to empower public speaking and language skills.

One of the huge problems of our TIC devices is the storage available. When we create documents they take up a place that many times is difficult to manage. In addition, our device may not have enough storage to handle all the docs we created for working. Google Drive can help you to deal with these problems. This tool gives you extra storage (15GB maximum) to drop off all your documents. It could be very useful to keep documents you want to erase in your laptop to create a backup of your storage. Meanwhile, Drive give you the choice to share files to others from your Drive space.

Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides.

As you can imagine such a huge platform as Google cannot quit without give you the possibilities for making files online. Inside this possibility, we would like to highlight Google Docs, Google Sheets and Google Slides. These three apps give you the choice for creating different kinds of files. Google Docs, is the text editor. It helps you to created documents as a Microsoft Word format online. Also, you can download it as a word editor on your device. If you have a word editor on Google, Google sheet is the spreadsheet. So if you are able to manage a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, you won’t have any problem with Google Sheet. Finally, the choice for a presentation editor is Google Slide. It is pretty similar to Microsoft PowerPoint or Keynote, the only difference is that you only need a Google account to gain access.

Once we have explained all the possibilities with those Google gadgets, you would probably ask one simple question: where do I store all the files I have just created? The answer would appear as quickly as the question. If you create all these documents online the place where all of them are saved is Google Drive —and you don’t have to worry about the save option, because it is automatically—  Additionally, all these gadgets can give you the choice to collaborate with partners. For instance, if you want to create a Google Slide with your work team, you can invite others to collaborate in your presentation just invite them by mailing them.

Google Classroom.

Google Classroom is one of the most interesting options Google could bring you as a teacher. With this gadget, you can create an online classroom in which you can interact directly with other users. You can access it as a student or as a teacher. If you jump into Google Classroom as a student, the organizer would have brought you access before. Once you are inside the classroom, you will able to interact with others as much as the organizer would like. The truly interesting idea of Google Classroom is being the owner of the classroom, the organizer. This idea will give you as a teacher many possibilities, as you can imagine. First of all, you as the owner of the classroom decide who has to be inside the class or not, you are de moderator. Additionally, you can create your classroom as you like or as it works better thinking about your audience. Google Classroom brings you the possibility to drop content on your class, create tasks, tests, links to youtube videos…Finally, and one of the highlights of the gadget is the easy way to keep feedback between students and teachers.

As you can see, Google Classroom can be the best choice for online learning and teaching. All the files you create in your classroom will be saved freely and automatically in your Google Drive storage.

Other gadgets: Youtube, Google Earth, Blogger, Hangouts…
