Can you see it? It’s DNA

Ours 4º ESO students have come back to the lab to make something extraordinary: see their own DNA. We made this experiment in an easy way; with the objective, everybody can do it in his or her own home. Everything you need is water, salt, alcohol 96º, dishwasher detergent and your own cells.

To extract DNA, we need our cells. We obtained cells from the epithelial mouth tissue. Ones we have the cells in a glass, we use detergent to break membranes and make the DNA free. In addition, we use a solution with water and salt to attack DNA and can see it easier. After all, we add alcohol for making a concentration gradient in which we can see a tiny thread: your DNA.

Easy, isn’t it? Are you able to do it at home?
